Author Guidelines

GENERAL PROVISIONS

The Editors of the Journal Biologia et Biotechnologia (JBB) strives to ensure a simple and straightforward process for submitting your manuscript for publication. These instructions provide all the information for submission, including the JBB editorial policy, style, and manuscript checklist. All articles submitted to JBB should be prepared according to the instructions below.

Manuscript volume

Reviews, together with tables and a list of references should not exceed 50,000 characters with spaces (approximately 30 pages of A4 format, 1.5 spacing, 12-point Times New Roman) and should contain no now more 16 figures.

Research articles can be up to 30,000 characters with spaces (approximately 15 pages of A4 format, 1.5 spacing, 12-point Times New Roman, along with tables and a list of references) and should contain no more 10 figures.

Research Articles are full-length research reports that contain detailed descriptions of experimental work, with a clear interpretation and discussion of the theoretical and experimental results and data. 
Research Articles should be structured according to the section headings Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, Nomenclature/Appendix (if applicable), and References. Authors should present their material with the utmost clarity and conciseness and in a logical manner. The constant repetition of experimental procedures, information, and facts among sections should be avoided. 

Minireviews or short communications should not exceed 12,000 characters with spaces (approximately 5-6 pages of A4 format with tables and a list of references up to 12 sources) and three figures.

Author's self-citation should not exceed 25%.

Online Submission

The manuscript and accompanying documents should be sent to the Editorial office in electronic form via the website: login | Biologia et Biotechnologia (biolbiotechnol.com).

Please upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions below:

  • The text in Word format (doc, docx, rtf), prepared using a publication template with figures inserted according to the text.
  • The drawings in TIFF format should have with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Drawings with inscriptions on the image should be made in two languages (Russian and English). Drawings should be provided separately from the text of the manuscript, since importing into Word modifies the image.
  • The title of the article, names of the authors, names of organizations, abstract, keywords, abbreviations, and captions to figures should be provided in two languages (Russian and English).
  • A Cover Letter should be provided indicating that the manuscript submitted for publication is not under consideration for publication elsewhere and the presented material has not been published anywhere before. For Russian authors, the cover letter should indicate that the research data have received an expert opinion on the absence of information constituting a state secret. In the  Cover Letter, the authors confirm that all participants who made a significant contribution to the study are presented as co-authors; those who did not participate in the study are not listed as co-authors; all co-authors approved the final version of the work and agreed to its submission for publication.
  • Download a License Agreement from the Biologia et Biotechnologia website (biolbiotechnol.com), it should be signed by all the authors.
  • Provide in an electronic form any data files that can be published together with the article (primary data, database, results of statistical analysis, mass media materials, etc.).

The Editorial Board will not consider manuscripts without a Cover Letter and an unsigned License Agreement.

Once accepted, the manuscript will undergo professional copy-editing, English editing, proofreading by the authors, final corrections, pagination, and, publication on the https://biolbiotechnol.com

Title page

  • Please place UDC in the upper left corner (Font Italic, size 9). 
  • Title of the paper, bold fond, up to 200 characters with spaces. The title should reflect the main result, essence and novelty of the work. The title of your manuscript should be concise, specific and relevant. 
  • Author name(s). Place an asterisk after the name of the author (corresponding author) to whom inquiries regarding the paper should be directed. Give his email address (phone and fax numbers are optional). 
  • Author affiliation(s) – names of the institution(s) where the work was performed, department, city, state, country. If there are two or more scientific institutions, please put digital superscripts to connect the name of the institution and the names of the authors working in the relevant institution. 
                If available, the 16-digit ORCID of the author(s). 
  • Key words (3–6). They should reflect: the subject of research, method, object, specifics of    this work. Please avoid general terms, abbreviations, and multiple concepts (e.g., the use of “and” or “of”). Only abbreviations that are firmly established in the field may be eligible.
  • List of abbreviations. Acronyms/Abbreviations/Initialisms should be defined the first time they appear in each of three sections: the abstract; the main text; the first figure or table. When defined for the first time, the acronym/abbreviation/initialism should be added in parentheses after the written-out form.

Manuscript Organization and Styles

Manuscripts should be divided into the following sections:

  • Title page
  • Abstract. The average length of an abstract should not exceed 20 lines approximately 1500 characters with spaces.The abstract should include the following elements: a general introduction to the field and a brief background of the research; an explanation of the objectives, approaches used, and key results; a description of the significance of the work.
  • Introduction .
    Materials and methods
  • Results
  • Discussion; the Discussion section must not recapitulate the Results
  • Conclusions
  • Financing: The names of funding organizations should be written in full (including numbers of grants in brackets)
  • Acknowledgments. Acknowledgments of people, grants (including numbers of grants in brackets), funds, etc.
  • References
  • Figure legends
  • Figures
  • Tables
  • Translation into English of the title of the article, authors' last names and initials, names of organizations, abstract, keywords, abbreviations, figure captions;

Text Formatting

  • Prepare the text in Microsoft (MS) Word (6.0 or later version). Set the page size to have 2 cm margins on all sides. The font size should be no smaller than 12 points (Times Roman). The entire manuscript should be 1.5 spaced, including the References and figure legends.Do not use automatic creation of footnotes, automatic hyphenation or automatic prohibition of hyphenation, creation of lists, automatic indentation, etc.
  • Tables – Use the Word table function, or MS Excel, to make tables. Manually created tables will not be accepted for publication.
  • There must be a space between initials and surname: A.A. Ivanov (except for the list of authors in the Title of the paper, where spaces should be also between the initials - A. A. Ivanov).
  • The date (day. month. year) must be written as: 01.01.2024.
  • The period is not placed after: UDC, article title, authors, addresses, headings and subheadings, table names, captions to figures, dimensions (s - second, g - gram, min - minute, h - hour, day - day, deg - degree).
  • The period is placed after: footnotes (including those in tables), notes to the table, brief annotations, abbreviations (m.p. - melting point), but not in subscripts: Tm – melting temperature, Tp.t – phase transition temperature. Exception: million (million) and billion (billion), they are written without a dot.
  • Decimal digits are entered only through periods, not commas (0.25 instead of 0,25).
  • The dash (-) sign is separated by spaces; the signs “minus”, “interval” or “chemical bond” are not separated by spaces.
  • “×” is used as the multiplication sign. The “×” sign is placed only if there is a number to the right of it. The symbol “∙” denotes complex compounds in chemical formulas, as well as non-covalent complexes (DNA∙RNA, etc.).
  • If other quotes, phrases or words are inserted inside a quote or phrase enclosed in quotation marks, in turn enclosed in quotation marks, it is recommended to use quotation marks of different patterns: external ones - “double”, internal ones - “single”.
  • In the formulas please use letters from the Latin and Greek alphabets.
  • Latin names of genera and species are written in italics; taxa of higher rank, as well as the names of viruses and bacteriophages in Latin transcription should be in roman font.
  • Gene names (except for those of yeast) should be in lowercase italics, protein names - in roman font.
  • The names of nucleotides (A, T, G, C, U), amino acid residues (Arg, Ile, Val, etc.) and phosphates (ATP, AMP, etc.) are written in Latin in straight font.
  • The numbering of nitrogenous bases and amino acid residues is written without a hyphen (T34, Ala89).
  • Please adhere to the international SI system of units.
  • Molecular mass is given in daltons (Da, kDa, MDa).
  • The number of nucleotide pairs is indicated by the abbreviations bp, kb.
  • The number of amino acid residues is indicated by the abbreviation а.a.
  • Biochemical terms (in particular enzymes) should correspond to IUPAC rules.
  • Abbreviations of terms and names in the text should be kept to a minimum.
  • Repetition of the same data in text, tables and graphs is unacceptable.

Requirements for Illustrations

  • Figures for are provided in separate files in TIFF format, if necessary - in archived form.
  • Drawings with captions on the image are presented in two languages.
  • Illustrations must have a resolution of 300 dpi to 600 dpi.
  • The use of additional layers is prohibited (except for the Graphic Abstract section).

Graphical Abstract

A graphical abstract (GA) should represent the topic of the article in an attention-grabbing way. GA is a single-panel image that allows readers to understand the main information at first glance. GA should be designed to clearly represent the study described in the paper.  In addition to summarizing the content, it should represent the topic of the article in an attention-grabbing way. Moreover, it should not be exactly the same as the Figure in the paper or just a simple superposition of several subfigures. Note that the GA must be original and unpublished artwork. Any postage stamps, currency from any country, or trademarked items should not be included in it.
The GA should be a high-quality illustration or diagram in any of the following formats: PNG, JPEG, or TIFF. The presence of images with layers on a transparent background is acceptable and desirable.
The minimum required size for a graphical annotation is 560 pixels × 1100 pixels (height × width).
Written text in a GA should be clear and easy to read, even when using the smallest character size. Long blocks of text and large white space should be avoided.
In the absence of a GA, the editors reserve the right to choose one independently.

Patents

Authors may claim any patents related to the published work, either pending or granted. However, it is recommended not to submit manuscripts for publication before patents have been issued, since publication may jeopardize the patent application process. Published articles will not be removed from journals for the patent claim process.

Exchange of Information With the Editorial Board

The Editorial Board (EB) uses electronic mail at all stages of work with authors, editors and reviewers. Authors should promptly inform about any changes in their contact data.
The EB sends proofs of papers to authors via email in pdf files. At the proofreading stage, significant changes to text, figures or tables are not allowed. If this is still necessary, this problem should be resolved with the EB.
During the submission process, please suggest three potential reviewers with the appropriate expertise to review the manuscript. Please provide detailed contact information (homepage, phone, e-mail address). 

Language

The Journal Biologia et Biotechnologia accepts articles in Russian and English. 
Authors can submit their own English translation of the paper or entrust the translation to the Editorial Board. 

Copyright

When published in the Journal Biologia et Biotechnologia, the authors jointly grant the Publisher the right to use the work under a simple (non-exclusive) license in the following ways:

  • Reproduction (in any form, unlimited copies) of the article on paper, electronic and other carriers, including reproduction in computer memory;
  • Distribution of the article through sale or other alienation of its original or copies;
  • Making the work available (by Internet) to the public in such a way that any person can access the work from any place and at any time of their own choice;
  • Inclusion of the article in composite and other works, including electronic databases;
  • Translation or other processing of the article with the possibility of a subsequent use  of such a translation, or by otherwise processed article (derivative) with the exclusive right to the derivative.

Supervisory Board Statements, Conflicts of Interest

For studies involving humans or animals, the article must include the number and date of the ethics committee approval. Authors can disclose potential conflicts of interest via the online submission system during the submission process.

Confidentiality

The Editorial Board and the administration of the journal's website do not transfer personal information to third parties, except in those cases and to the extent specified in the terms of the Author's Agreement.

The affiliation and email address of the authors of a manuscript accepted for publication will be published in the “About the Authors” section on the article page on the journal’s website.
The telephone number of the corresponding author will be known to the secretariat of the Editorial Board and will be used only in case of emergency.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.
